Strategic foundation of quality work

The strategic basis for the development of dialog-oriented quality work specific to art and music colleges is the development of quality objectives - which do not explicitly answer the question of what quality in the arts is and how it is demonstrated. Rather, the formulation of quality objectives follows the logic of agreeing on 'guidelines for quality work'. During the preparation of the internal university consultations on these guidelines, it became apparent that structuring and agreement can best succeed if initially 'only' the process architecture of the 'Folkwang University of the Arts' organization is communicated. For the concrete development and agreement of a system of quality objectives, the formulated 'guidelines for quality work' were stored in the process architecture for the core processes:

The system of quality objectives developed and finally agreed at the Folkwang University of the Arts is therefore based on the process architecture and the 'Guidelines for dialog-oriented quality work' formulated therein (see diagram Process architecture):

  • Guideline for the core process of studying and teaching: "From student applicants to individual personalities with artistic excellence"
  • Guideline for the core process of communication, events and cooperation: "From the interdisciplinary Folkwang idea to a socio-political actor"
  • Guideline for the core process of research and artistic development projects: "From innovative ideas to professional implementation with international appeal"

The system of quality objectives is structured according to the classical pattern:

Strategic objectives are derived from the overarching guideline of the core process. The strategic objectives are operationalized and linked to procedures and instruments as well as specific measures to achieve the objectives. The target matrix for the strategic goal "Ensuring and developing the quality of teaching and learning" in the core process of teaching and learning is provided here as an example:

The strategic quality objectives and the associated operationalizations served as an institutionalized basis for the formulation of the regulations for quality work. Quality work at the Folkwang University of the Arts is continuously developed and implemented on this basis.

Teaching guidelines and mission statement

Since the winter semester 2017/18, the Teaching Guidelines have supported teaching staff at Folkwang in their daily work. It offers helpful tips and suggestions on how to organize teaching, lessons and examinations and how to deal with the numerous "Folkwang specifics".

If you have any questions or suggestions regarding the Teaching Guidelines, please contact the Quality Development Department at any time.

Since fall 2022, the Folkwang University of the Arts has had a teaching mission statement, which is reflected in the curricula of the Folkwang degree programs.

It ties in with the Folkwang idea and reflects the general self-image of studying and teaching at the Folkwang University of the Arts. It serves to fulfill the requirements of the StudakVO NRW and at the same time as a basis for a lively discourse on "good" teaching. This version is open to adaptation and change at any time. The initiation and implementation of university-wide exchange formats for the further development of the mission statement is recommended by the QE department and will be implemented in the short term.
