Doctorate in musicology and music education
The Folkwang University of the Arts offers the possibility of a doctorate in musicology and music education (Dr. phil.). The doctoral procedure is divided into the doctoral studies and the doctoral examination.
Admission requirements for the doctoral procedure are
_for a doctorate in music education, the completion of a Master's degree in teaching or a comparable degree (e.g. Diplom or state examination) of at least eight semesters duration, for which the degree "Bachelor" is not awarded;
fora doctorate inmusicology, the completion of a Master's degree in musicology or a comparable course of study (e.g. Diplom or state examination) of at least eight semesters' duration, for which the Bachelor's degree is not awarded.
The doctoral program consists of
_for music education, a qualification phase and colloquia,
colloquia for musicology.
The doctoral examination consists of a dissertation and an oral defense.
The dissertation is a scientific paper which demonstrates the author's ability to work independently in a scientific manner and represents a significant contribution to research in the subject area. The dissertation must be written in German; upon application to the doctoral committee, the dissertation may be written in English. The doctoral committee decides on further exceptions.
The disputation is a defense of the accepted dissertation. It lasts 60 minutes. During this time, the doctoral candidate should demonstrate that he or she is capable of reflecting on the methods used, specifying the content of the research area dealt with and placing the topic within a broader problem horizon. The defense is held in German. Upon application to the doctoral committee, it may also be held in English. The doctoral committee decides on further exceptions.
