Erasmus+ (European Region Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students) is an EU programme to promote education, training, youth and sport in Europe. Since its foundation in 1987, it has enabled the international mobility of students, faculty and staff in the higher education sector.
The ERASMUS code for Folkwang University of the Arts is D ESSEN02.
The Erasmus+ programme supports the objectives of the European education agendas, promotes the modernization, internationalization and improvement of the higher education sector in Europe, increases the attractiveness of the EU as a place to study and research and contributes to the sustainable development of higher education in third countries. In addition, it strengthens international skills, personal development and the employability of students.

The 2021-2027 program focuses on social inclusion, the green and digital transitions and promoting the participation of young people in democratic life. To promote equal opportunities and inclusion, the Erasmus+ program provides additional funding for participants with disabilities, students with children, students from non-academic backgrounds and working students. Those who travel by low-emission means of transport such as bus and train can also apply for additional funding for sustainable travel. Information on these additional subsidies can be found here.
The following European countries participate in ERASMUS+: The 27 EU countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Norway, Serbia and Turkey.

The Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE) is the general quality framework for cooperation activities of higher education institutions at European and international level within the framework of Erasmus+. It is awarded by the EU Commission to universities that meet all the requirements for successful participation in the ERASMUS+ program.

Universities that have been awarded the ECHE describe their general strategy and their concrete implementation of the main principles of the program in their European Policy Statement (EPS), i.e. their Erasmus+ declaration on higher education policy.
The Erasmus+ programme funding is administered by national agencies in the participating countries and awarded to the universities. In Germany, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is the national agency (NA DAAD) for university cooperation.
