New construction of the Folkwang Library
The new Folkwang Library was opened on the Essen-Werden campus of the Folkwang University of the Arts on Wednesday, September 19, 2012, in the presence of numerous personalities from the worlds of culture, research and politics: Thanks to generous funding from the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen and Halbach Foundation, teaching staff and students have access to almost 180,000 media: books, periodicals and journals, sheet music, audio recordings, video recordings and much more.
In addition to the Folkwang holdings, the former musicology library of the Ruhr University Bochum and the former music education holdings of the University of Duisburg-Essen are now united here. This means that Folkwang now has one of the largest musicology collections in Germany.
The architectural design for the new building was created by the Max Dudler architectural office in Berlin, with the Bau- und Liegenschaftsbetrieb (BLB) NRW responsible for the project.
The translucent glass façade of the building is particularly noteworthy: photographic works with large-format close-ups of a quarry (photographer: Stefan Müller) were applied directly to the glazing on the original scale using a special process. This translucent shell playfully breaks down the boundaries between inside and outside.
The total cost of the new building is 7.4 million euros. The Folkwang Library was financed with 2,450,000 euros from the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Foundation and 4,950,000 euros from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

NRW State Architecture Prize for Exemplary Buildings 2015
On 23 November 2015, the library received the 2015 NRW State Architecture Prize for Exemplary Buildings, which is awarded every five years by the NRW-Bauministerium together with the Architektenkammer Nordrhein-Westfalen .
Architecture Prize 2015 of the City of Essen
The 2015 Architecture Prize of the City of Essen was awarded on 24 November 2015. With this prize, the city aims to draw attention to high-quality, new, contemporary architecture that has an identity-forming effect on the appearance, atmosphere and image of a city or region. Projects that have been built or remodelled in the past five years are eligible to apply.
Award for Good Buildings 2014
Audience and expert jury honour the Folkwang Library at the "Award for Good Buildings 2014" of the Association of German Architects Essen (Bund Deutscher Architekten, BDA).
