Institutes at the Folkwang University of the Arts
The Folkwang University of the Arts is home to two central and four departmental institutes that enrich the range of artistic and academic excellence represented at Folkwang with their respective areas of focus.
The Institute for Contemporary Dance (IZT)
The Institute for Contemporary Dance bundles the intensive cooperation between the dance courses, the Folkwang Dance Studio and the Folkwang Dance Archive and promotes interdisciplinary exchange with music, theater, design and science at the Folkwang University of the Arts.

Institute for Computer Music and Electronic Media (ICEM)
The ICEM (Institute for Computer Music and Electronic Media) at the Folkwang University of the Arts emerged from the Studio for Live Electronic Music and the Electronic Studio. Since 1971, the Folkwang University of the Arts has been teaching and researching in the field of electronic music and media-based arts from a compositional perspective. The composers have always sought close contact with the other artistic disciplines at the university.

Institute for Art and Design Studies
The Institute of Art and Design Studies at the Folkwang University of the Arts is dedicated to the young discipline of design studies, with art studies and visual studies as supporting disciplines for research and teaching. The Institute is responsible for the content and organization of the Master's degree course in Art and Design Studies and regulates the cooperation with the Institute for Art and Art Studies at the University of Duisburg-Essen.

Institute for Pop Music
The Institute for Pop Music at the Folkwang University of the Arts opened its doors at the Folkwang Campus Bochum in October 2014. It offers an advanced Master's degree course for pop artists and sees itself not only as a place of learning, but also as a place of thought. Here, pop music is not understood as a rigid "style", but as a dynamic form of contemporary art.

folkwang junior, the Folkwang University of the Arts' institute for the promotion of young artists, was opened in May 2019 with the aim of identifying young musical talent in the Ruhr region as early as possible and supporting their particular talents artistically through intensive specialized support even before they actually begin their studies. To this end, Folkwang launched the institute in cooperation with the Duisburg Music and Art School and is continuously expanding the network to include other cooperating local music schools.

Institute for Gregorian Chant
For almost 40 years now, Gregorian chant has been a special feature of the courses offered at the Folkwang University of the Arts. The full-time professorship for Gregorian chant and liturgy was created in 1981. The first holder was Prof. Dr. Godehard Joppich.
