On 17 June 1988, I opened the new premises of the Ferd. Thürmer Pianofortefabrik on Friederikastrasse in Bochum. The centrepiece of the ensemble of workshops, exhibition rooms, practice and residential facilities was the only new chamber music hall in NRW to date. Highly praised as a masterpiece by architects Werner Quarg and Lothar Possinke (†), the THÜRMER Hall is not only a leader in the region for aesthetic and, in particular, acoustic reasons.
Folkwang lecturers and students have regularly performed in the THÜRMER Hall for almost thirty years. Great pianists from all over the world such as Swjatoslaw Richter, Nikita Magaloff, Krytian Zimmerman, Bruno Leonardo Gelber, Martha Argerich, Paul Badura-Skoda, Mitsuko Uchida, Vladimir Ashkenazy and Elisabeth Leonskaja have performed here from the very first day. The THÜRMER Hall inspired chamber music of the highest calibre, and performers and guests alike benefited from making music in the best possible conditions.
This experience gave rise to my desire to make a contribution to securing the musical and artistic future of our region by establishing a foundation, even beyond my active professional life.My close ties with the Folkwang University of the Arts paved the way: I established the Thürmer Foundation in 2014.Its purpose is to promote the training, teaching, performance and further development of music at the Folkwang University of the Arts, preferably in the THÜRMER Hall, now part of the Folkwang Theatre Centre in Bochum. The foundation is still under construction. It is intended to encourage and invite people to invest in the future of music.Your support is most welcome!
