Music Teaching Bachelor and Master study courses
The teacher training study prepares the students for their future teaching profession in a wide range of areas. In addition to artistic tuition (instrumental and vocal), the course offering includes lectures in Music Pedagogy and Music Didactics, Musicology, Music Theory and Choral Directing / Conducting.
The Folkwang University of the Arts is one of the few art and music universities in Germany – and the only one in North Rhine-Westphalia to include Teacher Training in Primary Schools alongside the B.A./M.Ed. teacher training study courses for Grammar/Comprehensive schools as well as General, Secondary (Modern) and Comprehensive schools in its course offering. In cooperation with the University of Duisburg-Essen, Music is studied in combination with a second subject or two other fields of study (primary school) as well as educational sciences.
The standard period of study for the Bachelor study courses (B.A.) is six semesters and comprises 180 ECTS credits respectively, while for the Master study courses (M.Ed.) the period is four semesters and 120 ECTS credits.
Eight-semester degree programmes are being planned for the grammar school/comprehensive school as well as General, Secondary (Modern) and Comprehensive schools.
Numerous cooperations and projects with schools and other institutions providing educational programmes in the musical field (e.g. the Essen Philharmonie or the Education Programme of the Ruhr Piano Festival) as well as specialist seminars in the second phase of teacher training create a close relation to music pedagogy practice.
Following on from the Master study course, it is possible to undertake a doctoral study course in the Music Pedagogy and Musicology subjects.
