Institute for the Promotion of Young Artistic Talent | folkwang junior

Our mission is to identify and support highly gifted and exceponally talented young musicians, singers and dancers from the Ruhr metropolitan region at an early stage. As pre-college students at folkwang junior, young talents receive intensive specialist tuition and artistic mentoring before embarking on a full degree programme.

folkwang junior offers a comprehensive conservatory-style programme for advanced students of school age who exhibit the talent, potential, and ambition to pursue serious music study at the college level. At the Folkwang University of Arts, they work with world-class faculty to develop technical proficiency while fostering creativity and intellectual curiosity. Our pre-college students are prizewinners in national and international competitions, receive scholarships and grants, and perform in chamber music ensembles and as soloists with renowned orchestras. In doing so, they make the diversity and cultural identity of the Ruhr region visible.

Optimal support also requires close cooperation with general education schools, particularly those with a special focus on music. In addition, we collaborate with music and art schools. “With folkwang junior, the Folkwang University of the Arts established an indispensable programme in 2019 for the early development of musically gifted children and young people. By continuing to expand our institutional network through a wide range of partnerships with regional, national, and international partners, we are strengthening and shaping the work of this institute and of the university as a whole. I would like to thank the many deeply committed people involved - teachers, members of the advisory and executive boards, parents, cooperation partners, and supporters - for their invaluable contributions to nurturing young talent,” says Holger Zebu Kluth, Rector of the Folkwang University of the Arts.

There is also a vibrant exchange with concert halls in the region and beyond, with early talent development programmes at other German universities of music. In this way, existing infrastructures and resources complement one another in the development of our region’s young astistic talent. An interdisciplinary advisory board advises the institute’s executive and acts as a source of ideas, a catalyst, and a multiplier. Regular artistic exchanges with world-class artists further enrich our network.

Patron Frank Peter Zimmermann

Frank Peter Zimmermann, one of the most distinguished musicians of our time, who himself trained as a young student at the Folkwang from 1975 to 1977, looks back on this experience with great fondness.
"I remember very clearly how we travelled every week from Duisburg to the wonderful campus in Essen-Werden. The Folkwang is very close to my heart, as is the promotion of young talent from the Ruhr region. That's why I'm happy to take on the patronage of the folkwang junior institute."

Application and assessment of Artistic Aptitude

Admission as a pre-college student requires enrolment at a general education school as well as exceptional artistic aptitude. This is assessed in the Folkwang aptitude examination. It consists of an evaluation of subject-specific and general aptitude, along with a motivational interview.
