Biography

Emile Cantor was born 1955 in Apeldoorn (Netherlands). Already at the age of 14 he started to play the viola, fascinated by its tonal beauty. From 1976 till 1978 he took private lessons and studied at the National Conservatory of Paris as a student of Professor Serge Collot, whose culture and style of playing has influenced him most.

He performed as a soloist with the Netherland Chamber Orchestra in Amsterdam (under Szymon Goldberg and David Zinman), the Philharmonic Orchestra of Copenhagen and with the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse (under Michel Plasson). Since October 1986 he is a member of the Duesseldorf symphony orchestra. Between 1978 and 1988 he premiered more than 8 different works for viola and various ensembles.

His work as a teacher has gained him a international renown, also for the summercourses he gives in Germany, Spain, Belgium, Switzerland and Sweden. At the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen, he led a master class for viola as professor from 1999 to 2021 and continues to hold a teaching position at Folkwang.

Together with the pianist Philippe Terseleer he founded correspondances, a cycle of concerts that try to show the relationship between the different forms of art and music.
