Biography

Markus Roth, born in Freiburg im Breisgau in 1968. Studied guitar and music theory in Karlsruhe. Since 1994, he has taught at various institutions, including the music academies in Trossingen and Karlsruhe. He completed his doctoral project »Der Gesang als Asyl. Analytische Studien zu Hanns Eislers ‹Hollywood-Liederbuch›« (Singing as Asylum: Analytical Studies on Hanns Eisler's ›Hollywood Songbook‹) in 2006 with summa cum laude, and the book was published in 2007 by Wolke Verlag Hofheim. Roth joined the Folkwang University of the Arts in 2006 ; in May 2009, he was appointed professor. 2019-2025 Dean of Department 2. 2010-2014 Vice-President of the Society for Music Theory (GMTH).
