Kim Albrecht explores the aesthetic, social and epistemological dimensions of data at the intersection of technology, culture and science. His work combines visual research with theoretical reflection to make data structures, algorithmic systems and their cultural impact visible.
Albrecht studied graphic and interface design and holds a doctorate in philosophy with a focus on media studies. He has been Professor of Information Design at the Folkwang University of the Arts since 2025. There he teaches information design, computational design and data visualization with a focus on critical and artistic approaches to technology. Previously, he taught and researched at the Film University Babelsberg Konrad Wolf, Harvard University, Northeastern University and the Free University of Berlin.
He is a principal at metaLAB (at) Harvard, co-founder of metaLAB (at) Berlin and Faculty Associate at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society. His work has been exhibited internationally and is represented in the collections of the ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe, the Ars Electronica Center Linz and the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum New York. His first book Insight by de-sign was published in 2025. Media such as Nature, Science, Wired, Scientific American, FastCompany and The Economist have featured his work.
