The SANAA Building
on the grounds of the World Heritage Site Zollverein

The Folkwang University of the Arts’ SANAA building has been in use since January 2010, signifying the fact that Folkwang is now definitively settled in the grounds of the Zollverein World Heritage site. However, it is not only the varied events of the Folkwang itself that take place within this extraordinary architectural structure. The building is also hired out for conferences, exhibitions and other events.

Within view of the SANAA Building is the Quartier Nord, since October 2017 home to the Folkwang Design Faculty with its study courses Photography, Industrial Design, Communication Design and Art and Design Science.

The building’s architecture

Since its inception in 2006, the SANAA Building has been regarded as an architectural masterpiece with a path-breaking energy design. Its architects, Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa, consider it to be one of their most significant buildings. In the ‘Capital of Culture’ year of 2010, the two received (among other awards) the Pritzker Prize, the world’s top award for architects.

Uniting heritage with the modern, the SANAA Building breaks the architectural mould of former industrial buildings. The 34-metre-high construction has a floor area of 35 x 35 metres. Its unique feature is its internal structure, which consists of five levels (four storeys plus roof terrace) each of differing height. The 134 window openings seem randomly arranged but have in fact been adapted precisely to the light situation in the building’s interior; they also function as frames that allow the surroundings to appear as momentary segmental glimpses.

PACT Zollverein hat im Rahmen der Tanzplattform 2018 BloggerInnen losgeschickt, um das SANAA-Gebäude zu erkunden. Bloggerin Patricia wurde von Annika Knies (Folkwang Agentur) durch die Räumlichkeiten geführt.

Please make sure that we receive your enquiry in good time. Permission is issued after review.

Film/photographs for commercial use must be requested at the Folkwang AGENCY separately. You will need a separate permit and/or Right of Use statement. Payment may also be required.

Teachers and student groups of the subjects Photography and Architecture with photo-shooting requests should similarly contact the Folkwang AGENCY.

Mit dem PKW

Von Köln über die A3 in Richtung Oberhausen fahren. Bei Ausfahrt 16-Kreuz Breitscheid in A52 Richtung Essen einfädeln. Die Ausfahrt nach A40 nehmen. Bei Ausfahrt 26-Essen-Frillendorf Richtung Essen-Stoppenberg fahren (Schilder nach Bottrop / Katernberg / Stoppenberg / Zentrum). Bei Ernestinenstraße rechts abbiegen. Dem Straßenverlauf folgen bis Gelsenkirchener Str. 209.

Von Düsseldorf über die A52. Die Ausfahrt nach A40 nehmen. Weiter wie oben beschrieben.

Von Dortmund über die A40 fahren. Bei Ausfahrt 26-Essen-Frillendorf Richtung Essen-Stoppenberg fahren. Weiter wie oben beschrieben.

Aus der Innenstadt Essen über die Schützenbahn rechts in die Stoppenberger Strasse. Dem Streckenverlauf folgen bis Gelsenkirchener Str. 209.

Es befinden sich mehrere Parkmöglichkeiten rund um das Gelände Zollverein. Die dem SANAA-Gebäude am nächsten gelegenen sind P A2 und P B (bei Schacht 1/2/8).

Mit öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln

Ab Essen Hbf mit der Straßenbahn Linie 107 in Richtung Gelsenkirchen Hbf bis zur Haltestelle Zollverein fahren - Fahrtzeit ca. 16 Min.

Aus Duisburg oder Dortmund mit S-Bahn-Linie 2 oder RE 3 bis Zollverein Nord. Von dort ist das Zollverein-Gelände fußläufig zu erreichen.
