Biography

Stine Alpheis is a psychologist and neuroscientist whose research, teaching, and professional practice focus on artists’ health and prevention. After studying in Berlin and Copenhagen, she joined Professor Eckart Altenmüller at the Institute of Music Physiology and Musicians’ Medicine in Hannover. There, she completed her PhD in Systems Neuroscience, investigating how adverse childhood experiences may alter stress-related neural networks and influence the development of movement disorders in musicians.

She subsequently worked as a research associate at the Musikhochschule Lübeck. In addition to her research, she taught courses on the neurophysiological foundations of music-making and mental health, and led practical seminars for music students on managing performance anxiety. Since then, her research has focused on the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying performance under pressure. She regularly publishes her findings in international scientific journals and presents her work at conferences in Germany and abroad.

Sins of October 2026, Stine Alpheis has been appointed Junior Professor of Artists’ Health and Prevention at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen. In her research and teaching, she combines neuroscientific and psychological perspectives with the development of practical approaches to promoting health and sustainable performance among artists across disciplines.

As an enthusiastic amateur musician and long-standing organizer of the junge norddeutsche philharmonie, she has close ties to the German orchestral community. She regularly gives workshops for music students, professional musicians, institutions, and orchestras, including the NDR Radiophilharmonie, the Beethovenfest Bonn, and the Bundesjugendorchester. Her work is further supported by her ongoing training as a psychological psychotherapist (cognitive behavioral therapy).
