"Tradition is not the keeping of ashes, but the passing on of the flame." Thomas More
The Ruhr region is the cradle of mime theater in Germany, and the Folkwang University of the Arts is the home of this unique course of study. Since 1965, we have been teaching the broad field of physical theater - once based on the art of pantomime through comedic/dramatic physical theater to today's physical theater.
The course is in a continuous process of renewal with regard to the questioning and further development of physical theater, innovation in teaching and artistic research - in keeping with the Folkwang philosophy.
We are celebrating the anniversary semester with three Artist Diploma graduations, the physical theater evening "Short Cuts", a major anniversary production, a physical theater school meeting taking place for the first time internationally in this form and a physical theater festival taking place in collaboration with the Maschinenhaus Essen with fascinating contributions from all over Europe.
We cordially invite you, dear artists and art lovers, to celebrate with us and carry the flame forward.
