Structure

The first year

The first year of study comprises an in-depth insight into acting processes and a confrontation with the student's own acting capabilities as a basic experience. In addition, basic theoretical contents and the initial steps in the technical craft of directing are provided.
At the end of the first year, the students of directing will for the first time test their dramaturgical skills in scene studies, an interdisciplinary exercise and the directing project.

The second year

The second study year consists of intensive confrontation within the directing class and in-depth studies in the technical craft of directing.
This includes secondary directing disciplines, such as stage and costume design composition, working with technical equipment and light, textual analysis. In addition, the students show a further scene study, develop a project together with students at the Stuttgart School of Acting and – at the end of the second year – take their intermediate exam.

The third year

In the third year, the students intensively continue both their theoretical and technical studies and the dialogue within the directing class. In addition, they also undertake a work experience/assistance in a theatre and – at the end of the third year – stage a production for the first time outside the university.

The fourth year

In the fourth year, the focus is on the final production and the application.
Students design their Artist Diploma, create their first fully-fledged production and prepare for the transition into professional life.

The aim of the course is to train alert, interested directing talents for this complex, responsible profession.
Aware of their personal strengths, the prospective theater professionals should embrace the directing profession with respect and content.
