Under the impact of the economic crises and radical social change of recent years, a new human awareness of the world has developed. This new awareness, which is most clearly reflected in the omnipresent discourse on sustainability, can be understood in Heideggerian terms as a concern for human existence. The expression of this concern is a new sensibility. For the world of things, this means a turning away from the surface and a renewed questioning of the connection between material and form. As early as 1991, Vilém Flusser spoke of design as "one of the methods of giving form to matter". It is precisely this understanding of processual design, the questioning of the principles and conditions of metabolism in the sense of Gottfried Semper, that opens up new possibilities for design in our age of new materials and technologies. This renaissance of design is changing the professional image and practices of the designer to a considerable extent.
The Institute for Art and Design Studies at the Folkwang University of the Arts is dedicated to research and teaching design studies as a still young academic discipline. It sees itself as a dialogical platform for a critical discourse on design from a historical and contemporary perspective. Under the title "Design Questions", from May 2016 it will be inviting designers who have set standards in their field to rethink the concept of design with them.
The series will be continued in loose succession. Participation is free of charge and registration is not required. All lectures take place in the SANAA building on the Welterbe Zollverein campus of the Folkwang University of the Arts and begin at 6 pm. The lectures will be followed by a joint discussion.
