The Institute of Contemporary Dance
The Institute of Contemporary Dance (IZT) started its work at Folkwang in the 2011/2012 winter semester. The Folkwang dance education is now bundled in the institute and will receive an enhanced profile. In addition, the Folkwang Dance Studio is organisationally and artistically integrated there and closely associated with the master study courses. The Folkwang Dance Archive is anchored in the IZT as the third pillar of the institute. In the future, the collaboration with the Pina Bausch Foundation will also enable the reorganising of the collections, the documenting of the current artistic works and the development of a media centre for use in practice, research and teaching. The IZT Director is Prof. Malou Airaudo; also on the Board assisting her is Prof. Stephan Brinkmann and Prof. Ingo Meichsner.
As contemporary dance and dance theatre training, "Folkwang Dance" has been a particularly formative component of the range of courses at Folkwang since the university was founded in 1927. "Folkwang Dance" represents a brand name, pointing the way for the understanding of Modern Dance. The goal of dance education at the Folkwang University of the Arts is not to train dancers but human beings who dance, grasp the principles of movement and develop them in their own individual way.
Laban, Jooss, Leeder, Züllig, Cébron and Bausch have laid the foundation for a dance education, which even today unfolds ground-breaking impulses into the national and international dance scene.
