History of the course

The Master's degree program in Art and Design Studies was developed and established in 2006 by the then Department of Art and Design at the University of Duisburg-Essen. The then Department of Art and Design at the University of Duisburg-Essen included professors and their staff from the courses of Art Education, Industrial Design and Communication Design, to which the field of photography belonged. The Master's course started very successfully in this formation.

In the 2007/2008 winter semester, the design courses and their staff were transferred to the Folkwang University of the Arts in agreement with the Ministry of Innovation, Science, Research and Technology of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. From now on, the academic teaching staff of the Industrial Design and Communication Design courses and the independent Photography course will belong to the Folkwang University of the Arts.

The Art Education course remained at the University of Duisburg-Essen. The Master's degree course in Art and Design Studies initially remained formally at the University of Duisburg-Essen, but was jointly supported by the intended lecturers as planned and accredited. This was regulated in a cooperation agreement between the two universities. From the start of the 2012/13 winter semester, it will be possible to enrol on the Master's degree course in Art and Design Studies at the Folkwang University of the Arts.
