„Frauenballett“

Choreography: Susanne Linke

Susanne Linke received her dance education with Mary Wigman in Berlin, before she began her studies at Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen. Between 1970und 1973, she was a dancer with the Folkwang Tanstudio under the artistic direction of Pina Bausch. Here, she developed her own first choreographies and then headed the Folkwang Tanzstudio until summer 1985.

Susanne Linke created „Frauenballett“ in 1981 for the Folkwang Tanzstudio (FTS). The piece became successfull immediately – the FTS toured all around the world with it – and numerous companies put it on their playing schedule. In 1992/93, Susanne Linke again produced „Frauenballett with dancers of Folkwang Tanzstudio - and very recently in 2010 as part of the „2nd Biennale Tanzausbildung“. The revival celebrated on 4 March premiere in Essen.

Susanne Linke is one of the most important personalities in modern expressionist dance in Germany. Her work is fascinating and humerous and often, one can detect a certain grain of salt when she ruthlessly exploits social clichés. Her careful handeling of the choreographic movement materail is unique: no gesture is superfluous here, room is used in an optimal way, and she can never be accused of arbitrariness. Thus even the older choreographies always seem to be new and fit into the respective times. Susanne Linke’s work can always be discovered in a new way.
