Meredith Monk startet besondere künstlerische Zusammenarbeit mit 25 internationalen Folkwang Studierenden

Auftakt der Pina Bausch Professur 2025|26 an der Folkwang Universität der Künste

Die international renommierte Künstlerin Meredith Monk hat letzte Woche die Pina Bausch Professur für das Akademische Jahr 2025|26 an der Folkwang Universität der Künste angetreten. Am Campus Essen-Werden arbeitete sie mit 25 internationalen Studierenden aus allen Folkwang Disziplinen.

In ihrem interdisziplinären Kurs „Dancing Voice/Singing Body“ setzen sich die Studierenden – darunter Tänzer*innen, Schauspieler*innen, Performer*innen, Komponist*innen, Instrumentalist*innen, Fotograf*innen, Designer*innen und Wissenschaftler*innen im Alter von 20 bis 39 Jahren aus 12 Nationen – mit individuellen und gruppenbezogenen Stimm- und Bewegungsübungen auseinander. Außerdem lernen sie unterschiedliche wahrnehmungsgeprägte Methoden, erweiterte Gesangstechniken und kontemplative Praktiken kennen, um diese auf ihre künstlerische Arbeit zu übertragen.

„Es war mir ein Vergnügen, mit dieser talentierten Gruppe Studierender zu arbeiten, die so offen, konzentriert und neugierig ist. Beim Unterrichten lege ich besonderen Wert auf ein Gleichgewicht zwischen Disziplin, Technik und Spielfreude“, sagt Meredith Monk. „Ich hoffe, dass die Studierenden durch unsere gemeinsame Zeit Freude am Entdecken, am Ausprobieren neuer Formen, und am Einsatz von Stimme und Körper als künstlerische Werkzeuge finden“, so die Pina Bausch Gastprofessorin.

Nach zahlreichen Lehrtätigkeiten in den USA unterrichtet Meredith Monk im Rahmen der Pina Bausch Professur erstmals an einer deutschen Kunst- und Musikhochschule. Die erste von drei Kursphasen leitete sie zusammen mit Katie Geissinger und Ellen Fisher, zwei Mitgliedern ihres weltweit bekannten Vokal-Ensembles. Weitere Kurseinheiten sind im Winter und Frühjahr 2026 angesetzt. Eine öffentliche Präsentation der Pina Bausch Professur ist zum Abschluss der Arbeit von Meredith Monk für Juni 2026 geplant.

Meredith Monk gilt als eine der außergewöhnlichsten und einflussreichsten Künstlerinnen unserer Zeit. Ihre international gewürdigten Arbeiten wurden bereits an bedeutenden Veranstaltungsorten auf der ganzen Welt präsentiert. 1968 gründete sie The House, das sich einem interdisziplinären Performanceansatz verschrieben hat. Nachdem sie 1965 mit ihrer innovativen Erforschung der Stimme begonnen hatte, gründete sie 1978 das Meredith Monk & Vocal Ensemble, um ihre musikalischen Texturen und Formen zu erweitern. Zu ihren zahlreichen Auszeichnungen und Ehrungen zählen ein MacArthur Fellowship, zwei Guggenheim Fellowships, der Orden „Officier des Arts et Lettres“ des französischen Kulturministeriums, die Aufnahme in die American Academy of Arts and Letters, der Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize und die National Medal of Arts, die ihr von Präsident Barack Obama verliehen wurde. Neben ihren zahlreichen Vokalwerken hat Monk ein bedeutendes Repertoire für Orchester, Kammerensembles und Soloinstrumente geschaffen. Seit 1981 veröffentlicht sie auf dem Label ECM New Series. Von Herbst 2023 bis Frühjahr 2024 wurde ihre erste europäische Retrospektive Meredith Monk. Calling in Zusammenarbeit mit der Oude Kerk Amsterdam, der Hartwig Art Foundation und dem Haus der Kunst München realisiert. Kürzlich feierte Monk ihr 60. Bühnenjubiläum und ihr wurde am 20. Oktober 2025 bei der Musik-Biennale in Venedig der Goldene Löwe für ihr Lebenswerk verliehen.

Die Pina Bausch Professur schafft die Möglichkeit, international herausragende Künstler*innen aus allen Disziplinen als Gastprofessor*innen an die Folkwang Universität der Künste zu berufen. Hier können sie gemeinsam mit den Studierenden neue Arbeitsweisen entwickeln sowie ein alle Grenzen überschreitendes Denken und Forschen umsetzen.
Zum Wintersemester 2022|23 hatte die Folkwang Universität der Künste die Pina Bausch Professur eingerichtet – benannt nach der weltberühmten Folkwang Alumna Pina Bausch und in Zusammenarbeit mit der Pina Bausch Foundation. Den furiosen Auftakt machte Marina Abramović mit dem „Free Interdisciplinary Performance Lab“, an dem 24 Folkwang Studierende beteiligt waren, und der gemeinsamen Abschlusspräsentation sowie Publikation „54 Hours“. Im Sommersemester 2025 schuf Performance-Künstler und Bildhauer Miles Greenberg mit seinem Workshop „Black Ritual and Durational Action“ einen besonderen Arbeits- und Denkraum für die Auseinandersetzung mit Kunst. 15 internationale Folkwang Studierende aus allen künstlerisch-wissenschaftlichen Disziplinen präsentierten ihre Arbeiten in der Ausstellung „Restless Sanctuaries“.
Die Pina Bausch Professur wird ermöglicht vom Ministerium für Kultur und Wissenschaft des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen.

Meredith Monk embarks on a unique journey with 25 international Folkwang students

2025|26 Pina Bausch Professorship kicks off at the Folkwang University of the Arts

Last week saw internationally acclaimed artist Meredith Monk begin her Pina Bausch Professorship for the 2025-26 academic year at the Folkwang University of the Arts, working with 25 international students from all Folkwang disciplines at the Essen-Werden campus. As part of her interdisciplinary 'Dancing Voice/Singing Body' course, the students – who include dancers, actors, performers, composers, instrumentalists, photographers, designers and scientists aged 20 to 39 from 12 different nations – participate in individual and group vocal and movement exercises, as well as familiarise themselves with various perception-based methods, advanced singing techniques and contemplative practices they can then apply to their artistic work.

'It has been a pleasure to work with this talented group of students who are so open, concentrated and curious. When teaching, I place particular importance on ensuring there is a balance between discipline, technique, and playfulness,’ says Meredith Monk. ’I hope that through our time together they can connect with the joy of discovery, of trying new forms, and of using the voice and body as artistic tools’, the Pina Bausch Visiting Professor added.

Following numerous teaching stints in the USA, the Pina Bausch Professorship sees Meredith Monk teach at a German college of art and music for the first time. She led the first of three course phases alongside Katie Geissinger and Ellen Fisher, two members of her world-famous vocal ensemble. Further course units are scheduled for the winter and spring 2026, with a public presentation of the Pina Bausch Professorship planned for June 2026 to mark the end of Meredith Monk's tenure.

Meredith Monk is recognised as one of the most unique and influential artists of our time. Celebrated internationally, her work has been presented at major venues around the world. In 1968 she founded The House, a company dedicated to an interdisciplinary approach to performance. After beginning her innovative exploration of the voice in 1965, she founded Meredith Monk & Vocal Ensemble in 1978 to expand her musical textures and forms. Her numerous awards and honours include a MacArthur Fellowship, two Guggenheim Fellowships, Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters from the Republic of France, induction into the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize, and a National Medal of Arts, awarded by President Barack Obama. In addition to her numerous vocal works, Monk has created vital new repertoire for orchestra, chamber ensembles, and solo instruments. She has recorded with the ECM New Series label since 1981. From Fall 2023 to Spring 2024, Meredith Monk. Calling, her first European retrospective exhibition, was realised as a collaboration between Oude Kerk Amsterdam with Hartwig Art Foundation, and Haus der Kunst München. Recently Monk celebrated her 60th Performance Season and received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement in Music from the Venice Biennale this October.

The Pina Bausch Professorship provides an opportunity for internationally acclaimed artists from all disciplines to work at the Folkwang University of the Arts as a guest professor, collaborating with the students to develop new work methods and applying mindsets and research approaches that transcend all boundaries.
The Folkwang University of the Arts established the Pina Bausch Professorship – named after world-famous Folkwang alumna Pina Bausch and run in co-operation with the Pina Bausch Foundation – in the 2022-23 winter semester. Its rousing inauguration came in the form of Marina Abramović’s Free Interdisciplinary Performance Lab, which involved 26 Folkwang students, as well as the joint final presentation and 54 Hours publication. In the 2025 summer semester, performance artist and sculptor Miles Greenberg created a special working and thinking space for engaging with art with his workshop ‘Black Ritual and Durational Action’. Fifteen international Folkwang students from all artistic and academic disciplines presented their work in the exhibition ‘Restless Sanctuaries’.
