Im ausverkauften Pina Bausch Theater am Campus Essen-Werden fand letzten Freitag der Artist Talk mit der international gefeierten Künstlerin Meredith Monk statt. Die Pina Bausch Professorin 2025|26 war im Rahmen ihrer zweiten Arbeitsphase an der Folkwang Universität der Künste zu Gast. Die Veranstaltung bot Folkwang Studierenden, Lehrenden sowie Mitarbeitenden und weiteren Gästen eine einmalige Gelegenheit, mehr über Meredith Monks Lebenswerk und ihre künstlerische Philosophie im Austausch mit Dr. Ann-Katrin Günzel, Chefredakteurin von KUNSTFORUM International, zu erfahren.

Im Zentrum des Gesprächs gewährte Meredith Monk tiefe Einblicke in ihr vielschichtiges, interdisziplinäres künstlerisches Schaffen und sprach über ihre Lehrtätigkeit an der Folkwang Universität der Künste mit 25 Folkwang Studierenden.
„Ich habe eine wunderbare Zeit und liebe meine Studierenden. Es erfüllt mich mit Freude, vor allem weil es an der Folkwang Universität der Künste bereits die Idee der interdisziplinären Zusammenarbeit der Künste gibt. Das ist sehr ungewöhnlich. Diese Philosophie der interdisziplinären Arbeit ist sehr zeitgemäß und sehr wichtig. Es ist etwas, was wir in dieser Welt brauchen.“
Zahlreiche Folkwang Studierende und Besucher*innen nutzten die Gelegenheit, Fragen zu stellen und mit Meredith Monk ins Gespräch zu kommen.
Seit Oktober 2025 arbeitet die Pina Bausch Professorin Meredith Monk in ihrem Kurs „Dancing Voice/Singing Body“ zusammen mit 25 internationalen Folkwang Studierenden aus unterschiedlichen Disziplinen an der Erforschung von Stimme und Körper als künstlerische Werkzeuge. Zum Abschluss dieser besonderen künstlerischen Zusammenarbeit werden die Arbeiten der Studierenden aus dem Kurs am 14. Juni 2026 im Rahmen eines öffentlich zugänglichen Showcase am Folkwang Campus Essen-Werden präsentiert.
Meredith Monk gilt als eine der außergewöhnlichsten und einflussreichsten Künstlerinnen unserer Zeit. Ihre international gewürdigten Arbeiten wurden bereits an bedeutenden Veranstaltungsorten auf der ganzen Welt präsentiert. 1968 gründete sie The House, das sich einem interdisziplinären Performanceansatz verschrieben hat. Nachdem sie 1965 mit ihrer innovativen Erforschung der Stimme begonnen hatte, gründete sie 1978 das Meredith Monk & Vocal Ensemble, um ihre musikalischen Texturen und Formen zu erweitern. Zu ihren zahlreichen Auszeichnungen und Ehrungen zählen ein MacArthur Fellowship, zwei Guggenheim Fellowships, der Orden „Officier des Arts et des Lettres“ des französischen Kulturministeriums, die Aufnahme in die American Academy of Arts and Letters, der Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize und die National Medal of Arts, die ihr von Präsident Barack Obama verliehen wurde. Neben ihren zahlreichen Vokalwerken hat Monk ein bedeutendes Repertoire für Orchester, Kammerensembles und Soloinstrumente geschaffen. Seit 1981 veröffentlicht sie auf dem Label ECM New Series. Von Herbst 2023 bis Frühjahr 2024 wurde ihre erste europäische Retrospektive Meredith Monk. Calling in Zusammenarbeit mit der Oude Kerk Amsterdam, der Hartwig Art Foundation und dem Haus der Kunst München realisiert. Kürzlich feierte Monk ihr 60. Bühnenjubiläum und ihr wurde am 20. Oktober 2025 bei der Musik-Biennale in Venedig der Goldene Löwe für ihr Lebenswerk verliehen.
Die Pina Bausch Professur schafft die Möglichkeit, international herausragende Künstler*innen aus allen Disziplinen als Gastprofessor*innen an die Folkwang Universität der Künste zu berufen. Hier können sie gemeinsam mit den Studierenden neue Arbeitsweisen entwickeln sowie ein alle Grenzen überschreitendes Denken und Forschen umsetzen.
Zum Wintersemester 2022|23 hatte die Folkwang Universität der Künste die Pina Bausch Professur eingerichtet – benannt nach der weltberühmten Folkwang Alumna Pina Bausch und in Zusammenarbeit mit der Pina Bausch Foundation. Den furiosen Auftakt machte Marina Abramović mit dem „Free Interdisciplinary Performance Lab“, an dem 24 Folkwang Studierende beteiligt waren, und der gemeinsamen Abschlusspräsentation sowie Publikation „54 Hours“. Im Sommersemester 2025 schuf Performance-Künstler und Bildhauer Miles Greenberg mit seinem Workshop „Black Ritual and Durational Action“ einen besonderen Arbeits- und Denkraum für die Auseinandersetzung mit Kunst. 15 internationale Folkwang Studierende aus allen künstlerisch-wissenschaftlichen Disziplinen präsentierten ihre Arbeiten in der Ausstellung „Restless Sanctuaries“.
Die Pina Bausch Professur wird ermöglicht vom Ministerium für Kultur und Wissenschaft des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen.

Public showcase of the Pina Bausch Professorship 2025|26 on 14 June at the Essen-Werden Campus
Last Friday saw the Pina Bausch Theatre at the Essen-Werden Campus host an Artist Talk with internationally acclaimed artist Meredith Monk. The Pina Bausch Professor for 2025|26 was in attendance at the Folkwang University of the Arts as part of her second project phase, and the event gave Folkwang students, lecturers, staff and other guests a unique opportunity to get to know more about her life's work and artistic philosophy, in conversation with Dr Ann-Katrin Günzel, editor-in-chief at KUNSTFORUM International.
The talk centred on Meredith Monk providing insights into her varied, interdisciplinary artistic work and speaking about her teaching stint at the Folkwang University of the Arts with 25 Folkwang students.
"I am having a wonderful time. I love my students. It’s a joy. Especially the fact that at Folkwang University of the Arts, there is already this idea of interdisciplinary art. That’s very unusual. This philosophy of interdisciplinary work is very contemporary and very important. It is something we need in this world."
A number of Folkwang students and visitors seized the opportunity to ask questions and engage with Meredith Monk.
Since October 2025, Pina Bausch Professor Meredith Monk has been working with 25 international Folkwang students from various disciplines, exploring the voice and body as artistic tools in her ‘Dancing Voice/Singing Body’ course. Work from the students and from the course will be highlighted at the end of the professorship on 14 June 2026 at an informal showcase at Essen-Werden Campus, open to the public.
Meredith Monk is recognised as one of the most unique and influential artists of our time. Celebrated internationally, her work has been presented at major venues around the world. In 1968 she founded The House, a company dedicated to an interdisciplinary approach to performance. After beginning her innovative exploration of the voice in 1965, she founded Meredith Monk & Vocal Ensemble in 1978 to expand her musical textures and forms. Her numerous awards and honours include a MacArthur Fellowship, two Guggenheim Fellowships, Officer of the Order of Arts and des Letters from the Republic of France, induction into the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize, and a National Medal of Arts, awarded by President Barack Obama. In addition to her numerous vocal works, Monk has created vital new repertoire for orchestra, chamber ensembles, and solo instruments. She has recorded with the ECM New Series label since 1981. From Fall 2023 to Spring 2024, Meredith Monk. Calling, her first European retrospective exhibition, was realised as a collaboration between Oude Kerk Amsterdam with Hartwig Art Foundation, and Haus der Kunst München. Recently Monk celebrated her 60th Performance Season and received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement in Music from the Venice Biennale this October.

The Pina Bausch Professorship provides an opportunity for internationally acclaimed artists from all disciplines to work at the Folkwang University of the Arts as a guest professor, collaborating with the students to develop new work methods and applying mindsets and research approaches that transcend all boundaries.
The Folkwang University of the Arts established the Pina Bausch Professorship – named after world-famous Folkwang alumna Pina Bausch and run in co-operation with the Pina Bausch Foundation – in the 2022-23 winter semester. Its rousing inauguration came in the form of Marina Abramović’s Free Interdisciplinary Performance Lab, which involved 26 Folkwang students, as well as the joint final presentation and 54 Hours publication. In the 2025 summer semester, performance artist and sculptor Miles Greenberg created a special working and thinking space for engaging with art with his workshop ‘Black Ritual and Durational Action’. Fifteen international Folkwang students from all artistic and academic disciplines presented their work in the exhibition ‘Restless Sanctuaries’.
