The Society of Friends and Sponsors of the Folkwang University of the Arts
The Society of Friends and Sponsors of the Folkwang University of the Arts, Essen (Gesellschaft der Freunde und Förderer der Folkwang Universität der Künste e.V., Essen – GFFF) was set up in 1950, and from that time it has given support to students at our university who are particularly talented and worthy of encouragement. It has done this in many different ways. Its key functions in this regard are to award scholarships, to encourage projects and to award the Folkwang prize for students who show particular excellence. The first winners of the prize were Pina Bausch (dance) and Werner Sindermann (voice) in 1958 and Guido Mangold (photography) in 1960. Through its active participation in university life, the Society is bringing the past and the future of our self-identity – the Folkwang concept – into the present. In this way it contributes to ensuring the emergence of a younger generation of artists as well as maintaining and fostering cultural life. This private initiative is particularly important given that there is only limited assistance from state sources and this comes nowhere near to covering what is needed due to the limited items in the public budget. A prerequisite for receiving assistance from the Society is that the recipients distinguish themselves by their talent and application.
Membership of the Society:
All are cordially invited to join the circle of sponsors and to make their contribution to supporting students at the Folkwang University of the Arts. The annual membership fee is € 30 for individuals and € 150 for organisations. Members receive regular Folkwang programme updates, including all relevant dates, and a free ticket for each Hochschule concert and performance. One-off donations are, of course, welcome at any time.
