Music

The Folkwang’s world of music in overview

The Folkwang University’s music courses cover a very wide and varied range. In addition to instrumental training (in all orchestral instruments and other instruments), courses offered include church music, jazz, musical, voice|music theatre, and composition and conducting – as well as postgraduate and supplementary courses Chamber Music, Popular music, Concert performance and Orchestral performance. We also offer training in musicology, music pedagogy and school music teaching; and in line with the sense of a “university of the arts”, equal attention is given to practical and artistic aspects. All courses are currently taught in modules and are adapted to Bachelor’s/Master’s programmes.

Musical locations
Each of the individual Folkwang locations is distinguished by its own individual profile. Early music, chamber music and piano are offered in Duisburg; orchestral performance in Dortmund (Orchesterzentrum|NRW); and all the other musical disciplines at the main Folkwang location in the Benedictine Abbey at Essen-Werden.

Additional offerings and cross-linking
In addition to regular instruction, students at the Folkwang have the chance to take part in the master classes, workshops and summer courses that are continually on offer. The university also has seven in-house vocal and instrumental ensembles as well as a highly professionally equipped sound studio and the cross-faculty ‘ICEM’ (Institute for Computer Music and Electronic Media). In order to facilitate a variety of concert practice and stage experience, students work in close interaction with the other Folkwang arts, and the university works in cooperation with the region’s major theatres and concert halls.
