The choir structure at the Folkwang University of the Arts
Various choral ensembles exist at the Folkwang University of the Arts, each of them with different task, focuses and goals.
The Choral Singing syllabus comprises the following topics:
choral vocal training, sight-singing, singing aural training, choral practice, repertoire studies and presentation of the resulting pieces as part of internal music lessons and public concert projects.
The choral structure at the Folkwang University of the Arts is organised on a performance-related basis:
- I. Singing basics (1 semester period a week) and Choral Repertoire studies (1 semester period a week)
- students without previous knowledge in singing / choral singing - II. Vocal knowledge advanced course (1 semester period a week) and Choral Repertoire studies (1 semester period a week)
- students with basic knowledge in singing / choral singing - III. Concert choir (2 semester period a week)
- Students with sufficient experience in singing / choral singing
Singing basics and vocal knowledge advanced course:
- Teaching in small groups (approx. 4 to 8 students)
- Contents: choral vocal training, sight-singing exercises, singing aural training, choral practice
- Course periods and location: see notice board (Room W212) at the beginning of the semester
- Lecturers: advance students from the Choral Directing study course
Choral Repertoire studies
- Choir rehearsal with lecturers or advanced students
- Contents: Preparation of target-oriented choir literature
- Course periods: Fridays 1:15 pm to 2:15 pm
- Location: Torbogen
- Lecturer: Prof. Jörg Breiding
Concert Choir:
- Concert rehearsal (cast according to programme)
- Contents: choral vocal training, practical choral studies, preparation and realisation of concert projects
- Rehearsal periods: 6 pm to 9 pm (for rehearsal scheduling see notice board at the beginning of the semester)
- Location: Torbogen

Audition and group assignment
Assignment to the various ensembles takes place based on an audition at the beginning of the winter semester. Information on the date and group assignment is posted on the notice board. Students wishing to attend the Choral Singing course for the first time are requested to enter their names in good time by themselves in the appropriate lists.
Ensemble practice periods in Choral Directing
The ensemble practice periods are assigned to the appropriate choral classes and – as such – are an integral part of the Choral Directing course. The rehearsals are under the direction of the students of the relevant choral classes and primarily serve to provide practical experience as well as prepare music making lessons directed by students.
