Application “Professional Performance” (M.Mus.)


Amendments to the conducting of the aptitude testing procedure for the 2020/2021 winter semester:

In accordance with § 4 Section 1 of the Exceptions Regulations issued by the President's Office in the implementation of the Corona Epidemic Higher Education Ordinance (Official Notification No. 364), on 20th May 2020 the President's Office of the Folkwang University of the Arts has decided to adopt the proposal of Faculty 1 and make the following amendments to the conducting of the aptitude testing procedure for the Faculty 1 study courses:

Professional Performance, M. Mus.

Supplementary to the regulations laid down in the Framework Provisions for the Determination of Artis-tic or Course-specific Aptitude and Special Artistic Talent from 6th June 2018 in conjunction with § 3 of the Examination Regulations for the Professional Performance Master of Music study course (M. Mus.) from 11th June 2014, the aptitude testing procedure for the instruments listed below will take place as a two-stage procedure.

The first stage will be digitally conducted and consists of the timely submission of applicants' own re-cordings by electronic means (video links).

The following subject-related regulations apply to the recordings of the respective instruments:

Piano

The recording should not be older than 1 year. A complete classical sonata from Haydn, Mozart or Beethoven is expected. The individual movements of the classical sonata may be separately recorded.

 

The assessment criteria are:

Motoric-technical confidence and sovereignty

- aesthetics, sense and differentiation for the sound

- stylistic confidence and understanding thereof

- understanding for and (creative arrangement through) harmony 

- musical artistic arrangement of the works

Violin

The recording should not be more than 3 months old. The recording should consist of

 

1) two movements from one of the sonatas and partitas by J. S. Bach

2) the first movement with cadenza from a Mozart concerto 

3) a freely chosen piece.  

 

Due to the current situation, the programme can also be performed completely solo.

 

The assessment criteria are:

- musical/stylistic arrangement

- tone quality 

- intonation

Viola

The recording should not be more than 3 months old and everything can be recorded solo without piano accompaniment.

 

1) one piece of your choice (maximum duration +/- 8 minutes)

2) two contrasting movements from a cello suite or partita or a solo sonata for violin

3) the cadenza from the 1st movement of a classical concerto.

 

The assessment criteria are: 

- beauty of tone

- musical charisma

- intonation

- poise 

- temperament

- technical development.

Cello

The recording should not be more than 3 months old. The recording (duration of 20 to 25 minutes) should consist of:

 

1) the 1st movement from a major concerto (e.g. by Haydn, Dvorak, Schumann, etc.)

2) two contrasting movements from a suite for cello solo by J.S.Bach

Due to the current situation, all the works can be performed solo.

 

The assessment criteria are: 

- technical prowess (left hand: agility, intonation; right hand: tonal quality, bowing) 

- power of expression 

- stylistic differences

Flute

The recording should not be more than 3 months old. The recording (duration of 15 to 20 minutes) should consist of highly demanding works from at least three different stylistic periods, including a movement from one of the major concertos, performed as far as possible from memory.

 

Due to the current situation, the programme can also be performed completely solo.

 

The assessment criteria are:

- technical and instrumental skills at the highest level

- stylistic confidence

- ambitious programme

- musicality

- stage presence

Clarinet

The recording should not be more than 6 months old. The recording (duration of 15 to 20 minutes) should consist of

 

1) compulsory piece: a Mozart clarinet concerto, 1st movement

2) two other highly technically demanding freely chosen works from two different sty-listic periods (individual movements possible).

 

Due to the current situation, all the works can be performed solo.

 

The assessment criteria are:

- technically confident and sovereign mastery of the programme

- secure intonation

- tonal sophistication, colours, recognisably mature individual sound imagery 

- stylistic confidence

- musically outstanding, diverse arrangement

- "Stage presence": applicant able to create and maintain an atmosphere and use their own musically mature personality to the benefit of the (concert) ambience

Trumpet

The recording should not be more than 6 months old. The recording (duration of up to 10 minutes) should consist of two more challenging freely chosen works from different stylistic periods (one of which preferably for solo trumpet). Individual movements are possible.

 

Due to the current situation, the works can be performed solo.

 

The assessment criteria are:

- musically outstanding, diverse arrangement 

- stylistic confidence 

- technically confident and sovereign mastery of the programme 

- secure intonation 

- artistic personality

 

 

If this first stage of the examination procedure is passed, the candidate is invited to the second stage.

The examination in the second stage of the aptitude testing procedure takes place with the candidate physically present as laid down in § 3 of the Examination Regulations for the Professional Performance Master of Music study course (M.Mus.).

Application | Registration
For the study course “Professional Performance” you will need the following documents:

    • Application to participate in the qualifying examination (open from 1. September to the deadline on 15. November and from 16. November to the deadline on 15. March)
    • CV/Résumé
    • One passport photograph (3.5 x 4.5 cm)
    • Leaving certificate (simple copy) of last attended school
    • Students: verification of student status
      Graduated students: Leaving certificate(s)
      (simple copy)
      When changing the university/study programme or resuming your studies
      (in each of these cases) on the same study cycle with the same main subject (instrument/voice): Transcript of Records of the previous studies (simple copy)
    • Receipt for payment of the application fee (bank statement)
    • If applicable, certificate of foreign university entrance examination such as APS certificate / American College Test (ACT) / College Scholastic Ability Test / University Entrance Examination Center Test (simple copy) or other international educational achievements (simple copy) that constitute a university entrance qualification for Germany such as completed periods of studies; country-specific information: http://anabin.kmk.org/anabin.html

    Please note: We must have received your application documents in paper form not later than the application deadline March 15th (for the following winter semester) or November 15th (for the following summer semester).

    Application fee

    For your application a fee of € 50 is due.
    If you apply for multiple study courses simultaneously, the fee is € 50 for the first application and € 15 for every additional study course. The amount will be automatically calculated and shown to you in the application form.

    Aptitude test

    The aptitude tests for the winter semester usually take place in the first weeks of May and the aptitude tests for the summer semester usually at the end of January. Please note that you will have to be on site for the aptitude test.

    The aptitude test consists of an artistic instrumental presentation.

    Documents for enrolment

    • Completed application form for enrolment (send to you by mail after having successfully passed the aptitude test)
    • Completed application form for Folkwang Card (send to you by mail after having successfully passed the aptitude test)
    • Proof of existing health insurance
    • Certified copy of leaving certificate of your last attended school (certified translation where applicable)
    • Certified copy of your bachelor certificate (certified translation where applicable)
    • Evidence of sufficient language skills, if you did not acquire your qualification for university entrance in Germany
    • Proof of payment of the social contribution
