_Important note: For the main subject "Composition/Arrangement" there are currently no free capacities and therefore no applications are possible.

Admission requirements

_Evidence of artistic aptitude or outstanding artistic talent respectively by passing the aptitude test at the Folkwang University of the Arts.

 

_Applicants without a general university entrance certificate may also be admitted, provided that they exhibit outstanding artistic talent (see "Rahmeneignungsprüfungsordnung" Nr. 399 §8)

Language requirements

_Applicants have to verify proof of language level A2 with enrolment.

 

_The required levels of language skills at Folkwang University of the Arts are in accordance to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

Costs

_50 € application fee: For your application a fee of € 50 is due. The amount will be shown to you in the application form.

 

_No tuition fees are charged at Folkwang.

 

_Each semester all students have to pay a social contribution for the services of the Student Union, a student contribution for the work of the AStA (General Student Committee) and the VRR/NRW ticket. A breakdown of the amounts plus information on how to pay is available here.

Applications must be submitted via the Folkwang Application Portal by the end of the application period on 15 March (for the following winter semester). The portal is open for applications from 15 January to 15 March.

B) COMPLETION OF APPLICATION

Aptitude test

The aptitude test is usually held in the first weeks of May for the winter semester and in late January for the summer semester. Please note that you must attend in person.

 

The aptitude test consists of a practical and a theoretical examination:

 

I. Practical examination in the artistic main subject - "Jazz/Performing Artist".

 

Applicants perform two out of three prepared pieces of their choice. These must be jazz (or related styles) pieces at different tempos and must to be performed with theme and improvisation. One of these pieces must be a jazz standard. Sight-reading or sight-singing will also be tested with pieces of music provided during the examination. The duration of the exam is about 15 minutes. Accompanying musicians will be provided (current students).

 

II. Music Theory - "Jazz-Performing Artist

 

Students must demonstrate aural recognition skills (ear training) and basic knowledge of jazz theory. The area of ear training includes the recognition of intervals, scales, harmonies and simple chord combinations. For theory, questions about scale and chord formation as well as basic functional harmonic connections will be asked. The theoretical examination follows the practical examination of the artistic main subject.

Enrolment

Only after you have successfully applied for a study place is your last step in the application process enrolment. Enrolment takes place at the end of September for the start of studies in October and at the end of March for the start of studies in April. Please refer to your letter of admission for the exact period.
