Prof. Michael David Mills – Short Biography


Michael David Mills was born in New Mexico, USA.  He is a Professor for Vocal Coaching and Accompanying in the Musical Department of the Folkwang University of the Arts, Essen since 1995. He studied piano, singing and vocal accompanying at the University of North Texas, where he obtained his Bachelors Diploma in 1981 and his Masters Diploma in 1983. In 1983 he traveled to Vienna, Austria where he continued his studies in the Vocal Accompanying Department at the Vienna University of Music. At the same time he worked as a vocal coach and accompanist at the Vienna Chamber Opera. For 8 years he worked as a vocal coach at the Musical Theater School „Theater an der Wien“ under the auspices of Vienna’s Vereinigte Bühnen. In 1994 he had a teaching position at the Vienna University of Music in the opera and pedagogy departments. He regularly gives workshops, accompanies recital evenings and is active as a jury member of various  competitions. He is also the musical director of the Musical Workshop of the Summer Academy for Theater in Graz, Austria since 1990.
