Folkwang in the social media

Communications are subject to constant change. Media usage has undergone rapid development in the Web 2.0 era; being online is a normal everyday experience – even out and about. This is particularly true in the area of social media (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, blogs) where new communications channels are constantly being created, the use of which can be valuable for a wide range of target groups.

The presence in social networks is thus an integral component of the communications mix of universities in general and of the Folkwang University of the Arts in particular. A presence in these networks – especially in the areas of information, contact to potential students|those interested in studying and image advertising – is to be seen as an essential complement to our principal internet presence for the purpose of optimally reaching the respective target groups and entering into dialogue with them.

The Folkwang University of the Arts expressly welcomes the diversity of the various already existing presences of study courses, institutes and fields of activity. In order to provide security and orientation for the academic use of social media activities in the name of the university, social media guidelines and information on their professional use were adopted by the Folkwang President's Office in August 2014.

The Folkwang University of the Arts is currently actively represented on Facebook as well as in the two video portals YouTube and Vimeo.

Folkwang on Facebook

Since 2010, the Folkwang University of the Arts has had a Facebook presence – – editorially maintained by Folkwang Communications. Since then, we have received over 5,500 "I like" responses, more than three times as many likes as the current number of our students and counting!

The target group of our Facebook presence includes: students, potential students, alumni as well as the wider interested public and Friends of Folkwang. This Facebook presence is used for a wide range of activities, such as event communication, unusual information from the university, awards and interesting facts from the faculties, study-relevant themes, alumni messages, selected press releases as well as photo galleries, video posts and familiarisation contacts with our cooperation partners.

The website is not accessible to non-Facebook members. We would be delighted to receive possible themes and information on posts. Please send them to: socialmedia(at) or directly as a message via Facebook.
Although this presence is maintained in the German language, both comments from you and our replies are also – if required – international. External comments are possible and will be promptly responded to. Moreover, all public Folkwang events are posted on our main Facebook page – for the purpose of sharing, inviting and commenting.
