Folkwang

Enjoy the New Year period!

With tutorials from the Marina Abramović Method.

Created by and with Marina Abramović.

As part of the Folkwang Winter Special, we invite you to try out some of the unique exercises from our first Pina Bausch Professorship for yourself.

The exercises are part of the Abramović Method that Marina Abramović developed during her time teaching to allow performers to deepen their understanding of their body by expanding concentration, perception, stamina, and endurance. The exercises also encourage exploring mindfulness to reconnect with the present moment.

Each exercise should be completed without any distractions. Turn off all electronic devices.
Do not perform any exercise when under the influence of alcohol, or other drugs.
Make sure you are sufficiently hydrated.

You can perform them one after another for an intensive, ongoing experience, or complete them individually.
Once you have finished one or more exercises, you are encouraged to write down your experiences.

Exercise 1 - Water Drinking Exercise

Pour yourself a glass of pure water.
Take the glass in your hand and observe the liquid.
In slow motion, bring the glass to your lips.
Drink with small sips for as long as possible.
Consciously return the empty glass to its place.

Repeat: multiple times throughout the day.

Exercise 2 - Running in a circular path

When you wake in the morning, stay dressed as you were for sleep, put on your running shoes, go outside, and run around your home in a fixed route.

Duration: 5-10 minutes

Exercise 3 - Blinking your eyes

Stand still.
Blink your eyes as quickly as you can.
While blinking, look around the space you inhabit and your surroundings.
Then suddenly stop blinking, look straight ahead and open your eyes wide, noticing new details that come into focus.

Repeat as needed.
