UNESCO Worl Heritage Site Zollverein

The coal mine "Zollverein" is known as "the most beautiful coal mine of the world" and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Although many of you may already have seen this significant location in Essen, we will never grow tired of inviting those who are new at the Folkwang University of the Arts and those who postponed their sightseeing up to now to visit Zollverein with us.

Therefore, we would like to invite you to a round walk of the "Zollverein" site on Saturday, 27th September 2014. We will also visit the "25. Zechenfest", a festival at the coal mine (with fireworks and music performances as part of the "!SING - DAY OF SONG": www.dayofsong.de; only available in German).

Frei-Licht-bühne Mühlheim: Light art Festival

For the light art Festival "frei-LICHT-bühne", the open stage in Mühlheim will be transformed into a fascnitaing world of lights. Along with the light installations you will also find Sound installations, Performance art, art works as well as Walking acts, which altogehter result in a fascinationg atmosphere.

Barbecue to celebrate the end of the semester

Again, another semester is coming to an end! The last months with you have been funny, interesting, varied, exciting, adventurous, informative and, above all, they have always been a pleasure!
Some of you are now leaving Folkwang in order to head back home or start a new chapter in their lives in another city, whereas others will stay.
With that said, we would like to give all of us the opportunity to say goodbye or just enjoy a nice evening with old and new friends and celebrate a successfull semester while having a summer-barbecue on the "Brehminsel" (Brehm Island) on Saturday, 19th July 2014, beginning at 4 pm.

We provide a grill, sausages, bread aud sauces as well as plates/cutlery and will be there from 4 pm onwards. Everyone is invited to join us and also bring more food, if wished for.
Furthermore, you might want to bring: towel/blanket to sit on, frisbee, slackline etc.

Tour Photography

The annual exhibition "Rundgang Fotografie" is taking place from June 11th -13th. Folkwang Photography students will exhibit their works at different venues in the city ("Galerie 52", "Verteilerebene U-Bhanhof Rathaus" and "Designhaus").

Canoe Tour on the "Ruhr"

Have you also already had the idea of doing a tour with a canoe on the "Ruhr"? This is your chance!

We reserved five canoes, each for 4 persons, for Sunday, 29th June, and we cordially invite you to explore the "Ruhr" with us. The tour starts in Essen-Werden, then follows the "Ruhr" in the direction of "Kettwig-Stausee" and lasts approx. 2 hours. Of course, there will be a briefing on  how to use the canoe and avoid dangerous situations, so that you can participate even if you have no experince in canoeing.

Park Sounds & International Picnic

During the week from June 16 to 20, for a few days Folkwang students will transform the "Stadtgarten" in Essen into a sound landscape. Every evening from 8-10pm you can hear your fellow students' sound compositions in the park.

In order to not only turn the night into a musical experince but also a culinary one, we invite you to bring a traditional dish from your home country. Thus we can have a traditional picnic and get to know different food while listening to beautiful sounds.

Late-comers are of course welcome to join us later in the park.

Sportsparty at Seaside Beach Baldeney

Slowly but steadily, temperature is rising and the weather becomes more inviting to leave the house for outdoor activities. The Seaside Beach at the Baldeney Lake offers many opportunities like beach volleyball, soccer or climbing to vent your need for movement or to just take a break from everyday life by hanging out at the beach.

We will pay for admission and all sports activities (climbing etc.) and also bring a frisbee and a slackline. So you only need to bring casual clothing and shoes, sportive zeal and maybe a towel/blanket and food.
In case you do not want to participate in the sports activities, you are nevertheless welcome to join us and to cheer for the players from the side of the pitch ;-)

Pre-Easter PicnicVorösterliches Picknick

Easter is just around the corner and we would like to celebrate this tradtitional feast with you - with a Pre-Easter Picnic! Along with the traditional painting of Easter eggs we also planned different games, all associated with eggs, which you can try out. There are also lots of "Easterly" prizes awaiting the winners!

If the weather is good, the event will take place on the Brehm Island in Werden. Please, if you can, bring some blankets or other things tha you might sit on.

Old Synagogue and Culture Trail Essen

Essen has many interesting cultural landmarks! The Culture Trail which leads straight through the city centre is a good opportunity to inform you about cultural sites and places in Essen and also to orientate in the city.
Therefore we invite you to walk this trail together with us and other fellow students.

We will start with a 90-minute guided tour (in English) through the Old Synagogue, the House of Jewish Culture. Thence, we will walk through the city centre, pass by the Cathedral and the Grillo Theatre, amongst others, until we reach the Philharmonic Hall in Rüttenscheid.

Whoever is interested in this event may join us for this walk next Sunday!

Visit of the Lehmbruck Museum in Duisburg

The current exhibition at the Lehmbruck Museum has the title "Images of upheaval. Expressionism and Lehmbruck".  It shows outstanding paintings, sculptures and graphic art from the most important exponents of Expressionism taken from the Lehmbruck Museum's collection.

We bought tickets and booked a guided tour (in English). You are most welcome to visit the museum with us!

3-day trip to Weimar!

We have a special offer for you for the "long weekend" at the beginning of November:

The participants will have to pay a contribution of 50 Euros /person for this 3-day trip to Weimar. This contribution includes transfer, accommodation and breakfast (at a youth hostel) as well as the above mentioned cultural programme. The contribution has to be paid on 28th/29th October at the office P 214 (to Susanne Skipiol).

Christo's BIG AIR PACKAGE at the Gasometer Oberhausen

For those of you who could not join us last semester, this is the second chance to visit Christo's installation at the Gasometer Oberhausen!

"18 years after the wrapping of the Reichstag and 14 years after the installation "The Wall", Christo has returned to Germany with an extraordinary art project. The internationally acclaimed artist fills the Oberhausen Gasometer with his BIG AIR PACKAGE - the largest indoos sculpture in the world."

We would like to visit it together with you - a guided tour in English is alreday booked.

ExtraShift - the Night of Industrial Culture

The ExtraShift - the Night of Industrial Culture - will take place again very soon! There will be 450 events at 50 different locations all over the Ruhr area.

Christos BIG AIR PACKAGE at the Gasometer Oberhausen

"18 years after the wrapping of the Reichstag and 14 years after the installation "The Wall", Christo has returned to Germany with an extraordinary art project. The internationally acclaimed artist fills the Oberhausen Gasometer with his BIG AIR PACKAGE - the largest indoor sculpture in the world."

The probably most special ice rink of the region is located at the World Heritage Site Zollverein! We would like to go ice-skating there with you.

Sportfest im Seaside Beach Baldeney

So langsam werden die Temperaturen sommerlicher und laden dazu ein, auch mal die gute Stube für Aktivitäten im Freien zu verlassen. Mit Angeboten wie Beachvolleyball, Fußball oder Klettern bietet der Seaside Beach am Baldeneysee viele Gelegenheiten, dem Bewegungsdrang freien Lauf oder auch einfach nur am Strand die Seele baumeln zu lassen.

Wir übernehmen die Kosten für Eintritt und Aktivitäten (Klettern, etc.) und bringen außerdem noch Frisbee und Slackline mit. Ihr müsst also nur bequeme Kleidung und Schuhe, sportlichen Eifer und evtl. ein Handtuch/eine Decke sowie etwas Verpflegung mitbringen.
Wer sich nicht sportlich betätigen möchte, ist trotzdem eingeladen, mitzukommen und vom Spielfeldrand die SpielerInnen anzufeuern ;-)

Ausschreibung: Abschluss-Stipendien für das Wintersemester 2011/2012

Das kombinierte Stipendien- und Betreuungsprogramm (STIBET) des Deutschen Akademischen Austauschdienstes (DAAD) dient der verbesserten Betreuung ausländischer Studierender und Doktoranden und stellt gleichzeitig Stipendien für ausländische Studierende und Doktoranden bereit, die von den Hochschulen im Rahmen ihrer Internationalisierungsstrategien, z.B. zur Stärkung ihrer internationalen Partnerschaften eingesetzt werden können. Durch das Programm STIBET soll eine signifikante Verbesserung der Betreuungsleistungen für ausländische Studierende und Doktoranden erreicht und damit die Attraktivität und Wettbewerbsfähigkeit des Studienstandortes Deutschland erhöht werden.

Durch das Stipendienprogramm erhalten die Hochschulen die Möglichkeit, in eigener Entscheidung Stipendien aus Mitteln des DAAD an ausländische Studierende und Doktoranden zu vergeben. Es können sowohl Studierende in grundständigen Studiengängen (Diplom, Magister u.ä., Bachelor) als auch in weiterführenden Studiengängen (z.B. Master) bzw. Doktoranden gefördert werden. Die Studierenden müssen für ein reguläres Studium mit dem Ziel, einen der genannten Abschlüsse zu erwerben, eingeschrieben sein.

Aus diesen Mitteln kann die Folkwang Universität der Künste für das laufende Wintersemester 2011/2012 noch zwei Abschluss-Stipendien an ausländische Studierende vergeben:

Studienabschluss-Stipendien

Ziel: Vorrangiges Ziel von Studienabschlussbeihilfen ist es, ausländischen Studierenden und Doktoranden, die ohne eigenes Verschulden in Not geraten sind, durch finanzielle Unterstützung die Konzentration auf ihr Studium und den Studienabschluss zu ermöglichen.

Voraussetzung für eine Förderung ist, dass die Studierenden und Doktoranden gute Leistungen erbracht haben und ein erfolgreicher Studienabschluss binnen eines Jahres zu erwarten ist.

Förderdauer: Die Studienabschlussbeihilfe kann für max. sechs Monate vergeben werden; eine Verlängerung bis max. 12 Monate ist in Ausnahmefällen möglich.

Auf Grund der geringen zur Verfügung stehenden Mittel des DAAD sowie unter Berücksichtigung der sparsamen Bewirtschaftung dieser Mittel wird eine Beihilfe zur Förderung des Studienabschlusses zunächst für die Dauer von 3 Monaten zu je 250,- Euro gewährt werden.

Bewerbungen können bis zum 25.11.2011 bei der Beratungsstelle für internationale Studierende (Susanne Skipiol, P214) eingereicht werden.

Voraussetzung für eine Förderung ist, dass die Studierenden gute Leistungen erbracht haben und ein erfolgreicher Studienabschluss im Laufe eines Jahres (spätestens im Wintersemester 2012/2013) zu erwarten ist.
Förderdauer: Die Studienabschlussbeihilfe kann für max. sechs Monate vergeben werden; eine Verlängerung bis max. 12 Monate ist in Ausnahmefällen möglich.

Auf Grund der geringen zur Verfügung stehenden Mittel des DAAD sowie unter Berücksichtigung der sparsamen Bewirtschaftung dieser Mittel wird eine Beihilfe zur Förderung des Studienabschlusses zunächst für die Dauer von 3 Monate zu je 250,- Euro gewährt. Die Gesamtsumme in Höhe von 750,- Euro wird zu Beginn des Sommersemesters an die Stipendiaten überwiesen.

Aus diesen Mitteln kann die Folkwang Universität der Künste für das kommende Sommersemester 2012 fünf Stipendien mit Betreuungsleistung an ausländische Studierende vergeben:

Stipendien mit Betreuungsleistung
Ziel: Stipendien mit Betreuungsleistung sollen die Betreuung ausländischer Studierender verbessern, indem die Stipendiaten Betreuungsaufgaben oder ähnliche dem internationalen Austausch dienliche Leistungen erbringen.
Voraussetzung für eine Förderung ist die aktive Mitarbeit der Stipendiaten (im Umfang von durchschnittlich 2-4 Stunden pro Woche) in der Betreuung internationaler Studierender.

Für folgende Betreuungsaufgaben suchen wir Studierende:

1)       TutorIn im Fachbereich 1, der/die im Rahmen des Buddy-Programms (http://www.folkwang-uni.de/de/home/hochschule/international/international-office/beratungsstelle-fuer-int-studierende/buddy-programm/) die internationalen StudienanfängerInnen betreut – das heißt, als Ansprechperson bei Fragen zum Studium, zur Uni, zum Leben in Deutschland, etc. zur Verfügung steht. Außerdem werden Veranstaltungen geplant und durchgeführt – auch hierbei unterstützen die TutorInnen. Wichtig sind gute Englischkenntnisse.

4)       TutorIn im Fachbereich 4, der/die im Rahmen des Buddy-Programms (http://www.folkwang-uni.de/de/home/hochschule/international/international-office/beratungsstelle-fuer-int-studierende/buddy-programm/) die internationalen StudienanfängerInnen betreut – das heißt, als Ansprechperson bei Fragen zum Studium, zur Uni, zum Leben in Deutschland, etc. zur Verfügung steht. Außerdem werden Veranstaltungen geplant und durchgeführt – auch hierbei unterstützen die TutorInnen. Zusätzlich wird eventuell eine Unterstützung während der Aufnahmeprüfungen im Fachbereich 4 erforderlich sein (siehe hierzu die Ausschreibung zum 5. Stipendium mit Betreuungsleistung). Wichtig sind gute Englischkenntnisse.

5)       Betreuung und Begleitung bei den Eignungsprüfungen im Fachbereich 4: Der/die StipendiatIn betreut die BewerberInnen aus dem Tsinghua-Partnerschaftsprogramm während der Vorbereitung auf die Eignungsprüfung im Fachbereich 4 und begleitet sie persönlich zu den Eignungsprüfungen. Der Einsatzzeitraum wird hauptsächlich im Mai (Vorbereitung) und in der ersten Junihälfte (Eignungsprüfungen) sein. Der/die StipendiatIn fungiert während der Eignungsprüfungen als ÜbersetzerIn, falls diese Notwendigkeit eintreten sollte. Daher werden gute Deutsch- und Chinesisch-Kenntnisse bei den Stipendien-BewerberInnen vorausgesetzt.

Bewerbungen können bis zum 29.02.2012 bei der Beratungsstelle für internationale Studierende (Susanne Skipiol, P214) abgegeben werden.

- Motivationsschreiben
- Empfehlungsschreiben des betreuuenden Professoren/der betreuuenden Professorin
- Nachweis über die bisher erbrachten Studienleistungen (transcript of records) (- beim zuständigen Prüfungsamt zu beantragen)
- aktuelle Immatrikulationsbescheinigung

Diese Formulare/Dokumente müssen ausgefüllt und unterschrieben eingereicht werden. Eine Zusendung vorab per Mail ist möglich, allerdings müssen unterschriebene Unterlagen nachgereicht werden. Bewerbungen für die Stipendien mit Betreuungsleistung müssen persönlich bei Susanne Skipiol eingereicht werden.

Die Entscheidung über die Stipendienvergabe wird in der zweiten Märzhälfte mitgeteilt.
