Bodies of Sound: Feminist Approaches to Listening and Collective Marketing

Under the title Bodies of Sound, the Folkwang Institute for Pop Music is inviting to three workshops in the winter semester 2025 that explore feminist perspectives on sound, technology, and collective work.
The workshops will examine how sound and body are interwoven from a feminist perspective: as forms of resistance, listening, and collaborative creation.

Forms of Resistance
Electronics and Feminism by Lisa Simpson & Marieke Helmke

November 7 - 9, 2025

This practice-oriented workshop combines practical instrument-building techniques based on analog electronic circuits with collective learning and artistic exchange: How can we question (binary) systems through experiments with amplifiers, oscillators, feedback, and circuit bending? We will explore binary logic circuits through a practical introduction to handmade electronics from a feminist perspective in order to build our own DIY instruments.

DJing Signal Flow

December 5, 2025

We want to DJ. But why? And how does it work? Where do the signals come from and where do they flow to? We untangle all the knots in the cables and weave new ones in. Together, we question whether we want to become the new house DJ* or how we can subvert the field of DJing in order to find our own language with these tools.

DIY Radio with Shortwave Collective

December 12 - 14, 2025

Over two and a half days, this workshop invites participants to explore the political, creative, and ecological possibilities of radio as an artistic medium. Led by members of the feminist radio art group Shortwave Collective, the workshop combines presentations, practical experiments, and critical discussions to open up radio as a site for collaborative, imaginative, and socially engaged practice.
