Orchesterzentrum|NRW in Dortmund is a joint initiative of the state’s four music universities. It was established and is operated in equal partnership between the universities that sponsor it. The hallmark of Orchesterzentrum|NRW is orchestral work at the highest level. Graduates from undergraduate programmes in artistic instrumental training are prepared for careers in top-level orchestras in a practical and goal-oriented way. Orchesterzentrum|NRW is Europe’s first inter-university training location for future orchestral musicians.

In early April 2009 the Master’s programme in Orchestral Playing moved into a new building next to the Dortmund concert hall. Orchesterzentrum|NRW has the use of a total of 2,400 square metres on the ground floor and first floor of the building on the corner of Brückstrasse and Helle in the Dortmund city centre. The new building offers students and teachers ideal conditions for tuition, rehearsals and public concerts. The proximity to the concert hall means good opportunities to extend their close cooperation still further.

Within the framework of the newly designed Master’s course in Orchestral Playing, highly qualified young musicians will be prepared at Orchesterzentrum|NRW for a career in a distinguished orchestra. The training, which covers four semesters, is practical and goal-oriented. The course focuses upon training in orchestra-specific skills along with preparation for auditions and for the year of probation. In order to create a close connection with the international orchestral scene, Orchesterzentrum|NRW invites concertmasters, soloists and section principals from major orchestras as guest lecturers. Thus students are not only exposed to a diverse range of musical ideas but also come into personal contact with leading representatives of famous orchestras. For conservatorium graduates who envision their future in an orchestra, the Master’s course in Orchestral Playing offers a comprehensive specialisation that will equip them for their career.
