Änderungen für die Durchführung des Eignungsprüfungsverfahrens für das Wintersemester 2020/21

Gemäß § 4 Absatz 1 der Ordnung über die vom Rektorat getroffenen Ausnahmeregelungen in Umsetzung der Corona-Epidemie-Hochschulverordnung (Amtliche Mitteilung Nr. 364) hat das Rektorat der Folkwang Universität der Künste auf Vorschlag des Fachbereichs 4 am 28.04.2020 folgende Änderungen für die Durchführung des Eignungsprüfungsverfahrens für die Studiengänge des Fachbereichs 4 beschlossen:

Für alle Studiengänge im Fachbereich 4 gilt
Sind Gespräche mit der Prüfungskommission gemäß der jeweiligen studiengangsspezifischen Eignungsprüfungsordnung Bestandteil der Eignungsprüfung, dann finden diese nicht vor Ort statt, sondern werden als Videogespräche durchgeführt.


Application “Photography” (B.A.)

On this page you will find information on the application and the aptitude test as well as on the documents you will need to provide at the time of enrolment, if your application is successful.

Application | Registration
For the study course “Photography” you will need the following documents:

  • Application to participate in the qualifying examination (open from 16. November to the deadline on 15. March)
  • CV/Résumé
  • One passport photograph (3.5 x 4.5 cm)
  • Leaving certificate (simple copy) of last attended school
  • Where applicable leaving certificate or certificate of enrolment of your former university/ies
  • Evidence of sufficient language skills, if you did not acquire your qualification for university entrance in Germany
  • If applicable, certificate of foreign university entrance examination such as APS certificate / American College Test (ACT) / College Scholastic Ability Test / University Entrance Examination Center Test (simple copy) or other international educational achievements (simple copy) that constitute a university entrance qualification for Germany such as completed periods of studies; country-specific information: http://anabin.kmk.org/anabin.html
  • A portfolio containing the following:

    approx. 20 photographic work samples from the last two years. All papers must be submitted as copies or printouts only. A work may consist of several individual photos. The size of the prints is freely selectable, but should not be larger than DIN A3.

    For time-based works such as videos and films, a download link must be attached to the folder. For work samples exceeding a length of 2 minutes, the commission must be given a preferred excerpt of 2 minutes. (Example: Start at 00:30 | Stop at 02:30 min). File formats are Quicktime (.mov) or Mpeg4.

    The folder must show an intensive examination of the self-chosen topics. The works must reflect one's own artistic interests, one's imagination and ability to present as well as one's ability to perceive independently.

    A declaration that the submitted works have been created autonomously.

All your application documents must be submitted in the submission period from 12., 13. and 16.03.2020 at:

If you send your portfolio by letter-post, it must reach the Folkwang University of the Arts within the submission period.

Format, packaging and indexing of your portfolio

To facilitate the work of the office and Admissions, please observe the following points in your portfolio design:

  • Each sample of work must be marked with your name and numbered
  • Please pack the samples flat
  • Please write the sender’s address legibly on both sides of the portfolio
  • Please keep the portfolio size between DIN A3 and DIN A1
  • A numbered list of contents must be included with every portfolio

Aptitude test

Your aptitude is determined in a two-stage process. A first selection is made on the basis of your portfolio. All applicants who are deemed apt, will be invited to take part in an interview on-site. As a preparation for the interview you will given a homework to be solved photographically. As a preparation for the interview you will be given a homework to be solved photographically and a questionnaire.

Topics of the roughly 15 minute interview are mainly the homework and the questionnaire. The Interview is concerned with your photographic work as well as your rhetorical skills, social skills and study- as well as subject-specific interests.

Information on the aptitude test process can also be found in the aptitude test regulations (available in German only).

Documents for enrolment

  • Completed application form for enrolment (send to you by mail after having successfully passed the aptitude test)
  • Proof of existing health insurance
  • Completed application form for Folkwang Card (send to you by mail after having successfully passed the aptitude test)
  • Certified copy of leaving certificate of your last attended school (certified translation where applicable)
  • Evidence of sufficient language skills, if you did not acquire your qualification for university entrance in Germany
  • Proof of payment of the social contribution
