Änderungen für die Durchführung des Eignungsprüfungsverfahrens für das Wintersemester 2020/21

Gemäß § 4 Absatz 1 der Ordnung über die vom Rektorat getroffenen Ausnahmeregelungen in Umsetzung der Corona-Epidemie-Hochschulverordnung (Amtliche Mitteilung Nr. 364) hat das Rektorat der Folkwang Universität der Künste auf Vorschlag des Fachbereichs 4 am 28.04.2020 folgende Änderungen für die Durchführung des Eignungsprüfungsverfahrens für die Studiengänge des Fachbereichs 4 beschlossen:

Die Eignungsprüfung für die Zulassung zum Studium im Bachelorstudiengang „Kommunikationsdesign“ im Wintersemester 2020/2021 besteht abweichend von den Regelungen der studiengangsspezifischen Eignungsprüfungsordnung aus der Beurteilung der künstlerischen Eignung anhand der mit der Bewerbung eingereichten Mappe mit eigenhändig angefertigten Arbeitsproben. 


Application “Communication Design” (B.A.)

On this page you will find information on the application and the aptitude test as well as on the documents you will need to provide at the time of enrolment, if your application is successful.

Application | Registration
For the study course “Communication Design” you will need the following documents:

  • Application to participate in the qualifying examination (open from 16. November to the deadline on 15. March)
  • CV/Résumé
  • One passport photograph (3.5 x 4.5 cm)
  • Leaving certificate (simple copy) of last attended school
  • Where applicable leaving certificate or certificate of enrolment of your former university/ies
  • Evidence of sufficient language skills, if you did not acquire your qualification for university entrance in Germany
  • If applicable, certificate of foreign university entrance examination such as APS certificate / American College Test (ACT) / College Scholastic Ability Test / University Entrance Examination Center Test (simple copy) or other international educational achievements (simple copy) that constitute a university entrance qualification for Germany such as completed periods of studies; country-specific information: http://anabin.kmk.org/anabin.html
  • A portfolio with 15 descriptive, individual works (drawings, sketches, collages, etc. on paper, photos as original prints, digital works as printout, moving image works in standard data formats only) and a declaration that the submitted works have been created autonomously:
    Minimum size of black-and-white photos 24 x 30 cm
    Portfolio size between DIN A3 and DIN A1
  • A homework with the topic "Order and chaos" (20 works).
    As homework we expect a meaningful, original examination of the topic "Order and Chaos": free choice of techniques and media; for example the realization can take place as a series of works on paper (about 20 works), in the form of a video or an animation. (The restrictions and instructions for the compilation of the folder apply).

All your application documents must be submitted in the submission period 12., 13. and 16.03.2020 at:

If you send your portfolio by letter-post, it must reach the Folkwang University of the Arts within the submission period.

Format, packaging and indexing of your portfolio

To facilitate the work of the office and Admissions, please observe the following points in your portfolio design:

  • Each sample of work must be marked with your name and numbered
  • Please pack the samples flat
  • Please write the sender’s address legibly on both sides of the portfolio
  • Please keep the portfolio size between DIN A3 and DIN A1
  • A numbered list of contents must be included with every portfolio

Advice on subjects of study and portfolio

Subject consultations take place from October to April – not in the application period and the months of June to September.
Intending students are given the opportunity to discuss their work with a lecturer prior to application. We recommend that you bring all of the work that you have, without preselection.

Aptitude test

Your aptitude is determined in a two-stage process. A first selection is made on the basis of your portfolio and the assignment. All applicants who are deemed apt, will be invited to take part in the aptitude test. You will receive the date with the invitation and will be asked to prepare a letter of intent. Please note that you have to be on site for the second part of the aptitude test.

The aptitude test consists of a 15 mins. interview and will especially assess study objectives, subject-specific interests, social skills, social commitment, interest in cultural phenomena and level of reflection.

Documents for enrolment

  • Completed application form for enrolment (send to you by mail after having successfully passed the aptitude test)
  • Proof of existing health insurance
  • Completed application form for Folkwang Card (send to you by mail after having successfully passed the aptitude test)
  • Certified copy of leaving certificate of your last attended school (certified translation where applicable)
  • Evidence of sufficient language skills, if you did not acquire your qualification for university entrance in Germany
  • Proof of payment of the social contribution
