Application “Dance Composition” (M.A.)

Amendments to the conducting of the aptitude testing procedure for the 2020/2021 winter semester:

In accordance with § 4 Section 1 of the Exceptions Regulations issued by the President's Office in the implementation of the Corona Epidemic Higher Education Ordinance (Official Notification No. 364), on 10th June 2020 the President's Office of the Folkwang University of the Arts has decided to adopt the proposal of Faculty 3 and make the following amendments to the conducting of the aptitude testing procedure for the Faculty 1 study courses:

“Dance Composition” (M.A.)

Supplementary to the regulations laid down in the Framework Provisions for the Determination of Artistic or Course-specific Aptitude and Special Artistic Talent from 6th June 2018 in conjunction with § 3 of the Examination Regulations for Dance Compositon Master of Arts study course (M.A.) from 28th January 2015, the aptitude testing procedure will take place as a two-stage procedure.
The first stage will be digitally conducted and consists of the timely submission of applicants' own re-cordings by electronic means (video links).

The following subject-specific regulations apply to the recordings

Recordings should be no more than 1 month old. They are expected to include:

- A two-minute personal introduction on ‘Why I want to study at Folkwang’
- A 15-minute contemporary training session

Plus, depending on field of study:

a) Interpretation:
- A 2-minute solo

b) Choreography:
- A 5-minute solo

c) Movement notation/analysis:
- For applicants without a contemporary training background: a 10-minute presentation of their own movement material
- A 2-minute solo

Assessment criteria:
- For the training: Co-ordination, musicality, movement dynamics, sense of space.

For the solo, depending on field of study:

a) Interpretation: Dance performance, individual creativity
b) Choreography: Demonstration of an independent movement vocabulary, clear reference to a theme, spatial mastery, musicality, phrasing of the movement material
c) Movement notation/analysis: Clear reference to a theme, spatial mastery, musicality, phrasing of the movement material

If this first stage of the examination procedure is passed, the candidate is invited to the second stage. The examination in the second stage of the aptitude testing procedure takes place with the candidate physically present as laid down in § 3 of the Examination Regulations for the Dance bachelor study course.

Recommendations from the Aptitude Test Committee
If possible: Create videos specifically for the Folkwang application, in any location.

About the video recording:
_Edited versions are permitted, except for solos/choreography.
_Camera angle: Front-on
_Camera positioning: Fixed
_Image section: Full-body recording, except for commentary components (only head/upper body here)
About the content:

The exercises in the training sessions should include various dynamics, spatial directions, qualities and intensities, and demonstrate the applicants’ mobility. It will suffice to perform the exercises on one side only.
Contemporary training:
_Clothing: Tight-fitting, suitable for dancing, bare feet
_Content: Exercises on the floor and upright.

Application | Registration
For the study course “Dance Composition” you will need the following documents:

    • Application to participate in the qualifying examination (open from 16. November to the deadline on 15. March)
    • CV/Résumé
    • One passport photograph (3.5 x 4.5 cm)
    • Leaving certificate (simple copy) of last attended school
    • Where applicable leaving certificate or certificate of enrolment of your former university/ies
    • Receipt for payment of the application fee (bank statement)
    • If applicable, certificate of foreign university entrance examination such as APS certificate / American College Test (ACT) / College Scholastic Ability Test / University Entrance Examination Center Test (simple copy) or other international educational achievements (simple copy) that constitute a university entrance qualification for Germany such as completed periods of studies; country-specific information:

    Please note: We must have received your application documents in paper form not later than the application deadline March 15th (for the following winter semester).

    Application fee

    For your application a fee of € 50 is due.
    If you apply for multiple study courses simultaneously, the fee is € 50 for the first application and € 15 for every additional study course. The amount will be automatically calculated and shown to you in the application form.

    Aptitude test

    The aptitude tests usually takes place end of April/beginning of May. You will find the exact dates in the top on the right. Please note that you will have to be on site for the aptitude test. The aptitude tests will be carried out in the official language German and also in English.

    The aptitude test consists of several parts:

    • Choreography: A training session in classic and modern dance, performance of a 5 minutes choreography and a colloquium
    • Interpretation: A training session in classic and modern dance, performance of a 2 minutes choreography and a colloquium
    • Movement Notation / Movement Analysis: A training session in classic and modern dance and a colloquium. Applicants without a dance background have to present 10 minutes of their own movement material.

    Documents for enrolment

    • Completed application form for enrolment (send to you by mail after having successfully passed the aptitude test)
    • Completed application form for Folkwang Card (send to you by mail after having successfully passed the aptitude test)
    • Proof of existing health insurance
    • Certified copy of leaving certificate of your last attended school (certified translation where applicable)
    • Certified copy of your bachelor certificate (certified translation where applicable)
    • Evidence of sufficient language skills, if you did not acquire your qualification for university entrance in Germany
    • Proof of payment of the social contribution
