Music Teaching Bachelor and Master study courses at the Folkwang University of the Arts

The Folkwang University of the Arts is the only university to offer the complete spectrum of the Music Teaching study courses envisaged by the Teacher Training Act (LABG 2009) - with the exception of the relevant study course for vocational colleges. With its approx. 160 students, it makes a significant contribution to the provision of music teaching in grammar and comprehensive schools (approx. 105 students), in secondary (modern) and comprehensive schools (approx.  20 students) and primary schools (approx. 35 students). In cooperation with the University of Duisburg-Essen, Music can be studied in combination with a second subject.

Morevoer, for grammar/comprehensive schools the possibility exists for studying music as a single subject with the option of three different specialities: a) Music Pedagogy (Instrumental or Vocal Pedagogy), b) Music Theory and c) Musicology.

The standard period of study for Bachelor study courses (B.A.) is three years and comprises 180 ECTS credit points, while for the Master study courses (M.Ed.) it is two years and 120 ECTS credit points.

The Educational Science studies as well as the study course German for School Pupils with Migrational Background take place in the Teaching study courses at the University of Duisburg-Essen.

The Folkwang University of the Arts has the right to confer doctorates and post-doctorates. The basic principles for research particularly applied in the Teaching study courses may be continued by an in-depth academic qualification in the Musicology and Music Pedagogy subjects at the University of the Arts.
