Essen, the “Design city”

Essen is the European Capital of Culture for 2010 – not least thanks to the forward-looking conversion of icons of industrial culture such as the Zeche Zollverein (the Zollverein Mine complex), which is acquiring a new significance as a “design city”. It houses the Red Dot Design Museum and creative offices such as the impressive building by the Japanese architecture firm SANAA. This offers space for Folkwang events and activities. A new Hochschule building for the faculty of Design is also going to be built in the Zeche complex. Here our students have a direct line to an international platform for design – to the heartbeat of the design scene, so to speak.
