The Foundations of Typography | Typography

Typography makes language visible - endlessly multipliable and independent of any one form of media. It characterises (almost!) all fields of visual com-munication.

Sometimes text only wants to be read. Sometimes it wants to ruffle up its feathers and put itself in the limelight. Sometimes it wants to confuse. It all depends on the nature of the text. Typography deals with this connection between textual content and form.

Seldom is text found alone. It almost always adapts itself to a material or media context and is confronted with other visual structures: in illustrated books, in the Internet, in instruction leaflets or on billboards. Typography has many faces.
